The first-time husky owners, you need to know the tricks that would keep your dog’s coat healthy and shiny. Siberian Huskies are double-coated dogs, they have underneath coats, a soft undercoat to keep them warm, and a long outer coat to keep them dry. Mostly during spring, they start blowing their coat, for double coated dogs shedding is essential
UNDERCOAT SHEDDING
Siberian huskies generally cast off their undercoat twice a year and it lasts for nearly six weeks. Do not expect that the undercoat will blow once in a while or wholly at a time, it is sadly a very slow and continuous process that might drive you mad because the soft underneathcoat blows in a clump and sticks all over the furniture and other amenities of the house. Thus a vacuum cleaner will help you to clean the mess.
DO’s and Don’ts regarding shedding
✓ The must-do is to brush your Siberian husky regularly while they are shedding to get rid of the bunch of undercoat hairs. They barely need bathing because they have a dry coat and do not secret oil from their skin so their body odor stays well.
✓ Feed your husky omega fats which would keep their coat and skin healthy.
✓ Brush your Siberian husky during the nonshedding season at least once a week to keep the coat shiny and prevents various skin disease.
x Do not trim or shave your Siberian husky.
x Never expose their skin naked to sunlight, UV rays will affect their skin and thus they can develop several skin diseases.
BATHING
Siberian Huskies belong to the highly inclined climate, they have double-layered coat on their skin which helps them to cope with that particular climatic condition. When it comes to the Indian climate they have to face the high-humid temperature, which eventually does not mean that bathing them is a solution to keep them cool. Huskies do not have an oily coat which means their body odor is not that horrid, and they need regular bathing. Siberian Huskies need bathing when they roll up themselves in dust or mud, or they have fleas. Go for a prewashing session; brush your husky so that their tangled coat gets removed before it gets wet. Brushing the undercoat is pretty hard when it’s wet.
Steps you need to follow to bathe your husky:
• Pour some warm water into the bathtub and then place your dog in it.
• Wet him thoroughly with warm water, wetting the undercoat requires a lot of water.
• Avoid ears and eyes, tilt their head accordingly.
• Apply dog shampoo prescribed by your vet if your dog has sensitive skin, or you can use any commercial shampoo used for Siberian huskies.
• Wash his body persistently, do not scrub harshly.
• Rinse off his body with cold water; make sure the soap gets off properly, water requirements would be according to the density of the coat.
• Pat his body with a dry towel properly, then use a blow dryer with cool air to dry his undercoat properly.
